Experimentation is Key

Yesterday was a very productive; product filled day. Got a couple of holiday gifts; and one cheap one for myself. I ended up getting Toontracks DRUM RIFFS By Matt Hallpern and I ended up writing a song entirely then and there. It took 3-4 hours and it’s basically done now.

There is something crazy about getting a new piece of equipment; or a new effect or sound: if it’s worth it’s weight in gold it will give you some nuggets of itself to you. Sounds a little weird maybe; but that’s the only analogy I could think of.

In my experimentations with photography, it makes me wish I had some more lenses to mess around with. I do love my standard zoom very much so because it has taken a lot of great shots; but I would love to toy around with some new ones. Perhaps in the new year!

In the mean time; I am deciding what piece of equipment will be worth it’s weight in gold to me right now as a gift to myself for a productive new year. Sound a bit selfish? Well; yeah. Why not though. I want to be done this album and having a bass might help. Dunno though.

Giving to yourself is important. More important than to others; though giving to others has a lot of joy. That immediate joy does go away a lot more quickly. If you work hard and earn something for yourself, so people say, you are destined to be happy. So be it.

With that I leave you with a creepy picture.

Stormcoast

Hello reader; just thought I’d share some photos I took of a particularly bizarre day of weather.

Natural Drama

It was beautiful and started to storm otherwise I would have gotten a rainbow! Next time.

Nearing Completion

I’m very happy to say that the album “Land of Secrets” is nearing completion!

I just finished another song who’s demo name was “ABOMINATION WRATH!” But it has nothing to do with abominations or wrath. It’s more of an upbeat potential single song. That’s right folks; a SINGLE. Perhaps. It’s a largely contrasting song to the rest of the material but that’s totally fine because it still has a lot of atmosphere – just in a different way!

If you have read my blog you can see all about atmospherics and finding moments – and I think I get both of those with this song. It makes me really excited. In the guitarpick.

Listening back over to the song; it seems really natural and evident to me. As if I was just filling in the spaces in the recording and letting it flow. The mix is probably one of my best too; the bass sounds huge and the guitars sound just right. It only took a cuppa hours but tis done. A long time in the making.

I hope to share it with you all very soon 🙂

Thoughts on Moving Forward

So as I sit here; after a long happy couple of days; I think about moving forward. It seems clear to me what I have to do and what I need to do to do such a thing; but alas my mind is growing tired as it is nearly time for me to rest. Life should be joyous. Life should be fulfilled.

The question is; what do you need to fulfill it? What kind of things bring you joy? Painting cars? Being a master of fine cheese? Perhaps making beautiful instruments? Or all of the above?

I read an article the other day that said that with every 7 years you have a new life time. I thought it was a clever hook or dodgy title to a post that might be a waste of my time; but then it was not. And it was a pleasant shock.

Supposedly it takes 7 years of hard work and effort to master something. Now; with that in mind if you live until you are 87 (ish) you can master 7 things starting at the age of ten. Something about that is horribly exciting. Something about that makes me wonder and wonder more and be curious.

Something about that tells me how I want to lead my life. Pity I won’t be able to link you the article here; you should find it yourself. It was damn well intriguing.

Photographs

Well hey there reader(s).

It turns out I have a beautiful new camera.

Though, I will never call myself a photographer, for fear of being loathed off of the internet from all of the actual professionals out there. But I can say I do like it when I snap a pretty picture.

And I believe everyone has the potential to do that at least once in their lives.

Here are some recent pictures I took of a bunch of musical equipment.

And finally; one of the most beautiful ladies I know.

She had gotten her hair done recently, as she works at a prominent Vancouver salon; and I wanted to capture how terribly red her hair was!
